Garden Trellis Systems: What to Use for Beans, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, and Squash

Two questions decide every trellis: does the plant climb by itself, and what does the fruit weigh? Answer those and the material choice is nearly made for you.
Most trellis failures are not design failures. They are a support sized for a seedling holding up a plant in August.

The Short Answer
- Peas, beans, cucumbers: netting or string on a frame. They climb themselves.
- Tomatoes: stakes, cages, or panel. They have no tendrils, so you tie or clip them all season.
- Small squash, melons: a rigid panel, plus slings under the fruit for melons.
- Pumpkins, large winter squash: leave them on the ground.
The Difference That Decides Everything: Tendrils
Some plants climb. Some plants lean. Illinois Extension draws the line plainly: peas and beans “produce tendrils and will attach themselves to stakes”, while other plants “such as tomatoes, will need to be tied to them”. (Illinois Extension)
That sounds like a small botanical detail. It is actually the difference between a trellis you build once and a trellis you return to every week from June to September.
A self climbing crop needs something to grab: mesh, netting, string, wire. A tomato needs something to lean against and be fastened to, which means the support has to be reachable and the fasteners have to be something you will actually keep using in July.
Match the Support to the Crop

The last row is the one people argue with, and the extension guidance is not ambiguous. University of Minnesota Extension: “Larger squash and pumpkins are too heavy to trellis. Grow them on the ground”. (UMN Extension) Illinois Extension gives the practical cutoff, noting trellising “works best for smaller fruit (3 pounds or less)”.
Height, and the Foot You Have to Bury
This is the most common sizing mistake, and it is arithmetic rather than judgement. University of Minnesota Extension states it directly: “A six-foot stake pounded a foot into the ground will leave five feet of trellis area”. Illinois Extension agrees on the depth, saying stakes should go at least a foot into the ground, and describes typical stakes as “5 to 6 feet tall”, with wooden ones “at least 1-inch square”.
Buy for usable height plus burial depth. A four-foot stake set properly gives you about three feet of growing support, which is enough for a determinate tomato and nowhere near enough for an indeterminate one.
On spacing, UMN suggests trying “five or six feet between stakes”, and using three stakes for a wider trellis. Sag between posts is where a loaded trellis begins to fail, so the heavier the crop, the closer the posts.

For homemade tomato cages, UMN recommends “cement-reinforcing mesh” with “four-inch square holes”. The hole size is the point: your hand and a ripe tomato both have to fit through it. Cages made from fine mesh look tidy and make picking miserable.
Netting deserves one honest caveat. It is excellent value and stores in a pocket, but it carries almost nothing by itself. The netting is the surface the plant grabs. Something else, posts or a frame, is carrying the load.
Anchoring for August, Not May
A bare trellis in spring is a frame. The same trellis in late summer is a solid wall of leaves, and wind treats it like a sail. Nearly every blown-over trellis was anchored for the version of the plant that existed on the day it was installed.
- Go the full foot deep, minimum, and deeper in loose or sandy soil.
- Brace the ends. The end posts take the pull of the whole run. The middle mostly carries weight down; the ends carry it sideways.
- Close the gap for heavy crops. Five feet between posts for beans is comfortable. For a loaded squash panel, less.
- Set posts before planting. Driving a post next to established roots damages the plant you are trying to hold up.
The Cattle Panel Arch
The most common serious trellis on a homestead is a livestock panel bent into an arch between two beds, pinned at each side with steel posts. It is popular for reasons that follow directly from everything above: it is rigid, so it carries weight without sag; it needs no fasteners for a crop with tendrils; and it puts the fruit at eye level where you can actually see it.
Two things to get right. The arch pushes outward at the base as it flexes, so the bottom of each side has to be pinned against a post rather than simply resting in soil. And an arch makes shade. That is a benefit for lettuce underneath in July and a problem for anything that needs full sun, so orientation is part of the decision rather than an afterthought.
An arch is also the answer for melons and small squash, since the fruit hangs clear and a sling can be tied to the panel anywhere along its length.
Small Spaces, Containers, and Balconies
Vertical growing is usually sold as the small-space answer, and it mostly is. But the constraints change, and two of them catch people out.
- You cannot bury a post in a container. The buried foot that anchors a garden trellis is not available, so the support has to be braced to the pot itself or to a wall. A tall stake pushed into potting mix will lever itself out once the plant catches wind.
- A loaded trellis will tip a pot. The plant above the rim quickly outweighs the container below it. Wide, heavy pots beat tall ones for anything trellised, and a pot against a wall it can be tied to beats a free-standing one.
- Wall heat is real. A trellis flat against a sunny wall gets radiated heat as well as direct sun. That is useful in a short season and punishing in a hot one.
- Pick the light crops. Peas, pole beans, and cucumbers climb themselves and stay light. They are the crops that suit a container trellis. Indeterminate tomatoes in a pot need staking, tying, and far more water than most people expect.
The honest version: vertical growing saves floor space, not root space. The pot still has to be big enough for the plant you are asking the trellis to hold up.
What Actually Gets Used
A trellis is usually three purchases, not one: something that carries the load, something the plant grabs, and something to fasten a crop that will not hold on by itself.

Netting carries almost nothing on its own. It needs posts or a frame to take the load. It is also the part that dies first, so bring it in over winter.

Plastic coated steel for frames, single plants and holding netting up. Steel takes a loaded plant in a way bamboo does not.
At 48 inches, a foot in the ground leaves about three feet of support. That suits determinate tomatoes and peppers. Indeterminate tomatoes want a taller stake or a panel.

Trellis clips for tying
Tomatoes have no tendrils, so they must be fastened to the support as they grow. Clips are faster than twine and reusable season to season.
Leave room for the stem to thicken. Anything fastened tight in June can girdle the plant by August.

Storage, and Why Netting Dies First
Netting is the part of the system that wears out, and it usually wears out from two things rather than use: sunlight over a winter it did not need to be outside for, and the job of pulling a season of dead vine out of it.
The practical answer most gardeners land on is to cut the vines at soil level in autumn, leave them to dry on the netting for a week or two, and then shake the brittle remains out. Wet green vine welds itself into mesh. Dry brown vine falls out.
Common Mistakes
- Buying for the seedling. Size every part for the plant in August.
- Forgetting the buried foot. A six-foot stake is a five-foot trellis.
- Trellising pumpkins. Extension guidance says grow them on the ground, and the fruit settles the argument either way.
- Expecting netting to carry the load. It is a climbing surface, not a structure.
- Fine mesh cages. If your hand does not fit, picking is a chore all season.
- Melons with no slings. The vine gives way before the trellis does.
- Tying tomatoes tight. Stems thicken. A tight tie in June girdles the plant by August.

Do cucumbers and beans need to be tied to a trellis?
No. Peas, beans, and cucumbers produce tendrils and will attach themselves. Tomatoes do not produce tendrils, so they have to be tied or clipped to the support as they grow. That single difference decides how much work a crop will be all season.
Can I trellis pumpkins and winter squash?
Generally no. University of Minnesota Extension is direct about it: larger squash and pumpkins are too heavy to trellis, and should be grown on the ground. Illinois Extension puts a workable number on it, saying trellising works best for smaller fruit of about 3 pounds or less. Small squash and cucumbers are fine.
What about melons?
Melons can be trellised, but the fruit needs its own support. University of Minnesota Extension recommends making hammocks or slings from cloth strips to support the developing fruit. Without that, the melon eventually tears itself off the vine under its own weight.
How far apart should trellis posts go?
University of Minnesota Extension suggests trying five or six feet between stakes, and using three stakes for a wider trellis. Closer spacing matters more as the crop gets heavier, because the sag between posts is where a loaded trellis starts to fail.
Is a cattle panel better than netting?
They solve different problems. A rigid panel carries weight, holds its shape, and lasts many seasons, which suits heavy or perennial crops. Netting is cheap, packs away small, and spans a wide opening, which suits annual vines like peas and cucumbers. Netting cannot carry a heavy crop on its own; it needs a frame that does.
Will a trellis blow over in wind?
A loaded trellis is a sail. A wall of leaves in August catches far more wind than the bare frame you put up in May, so anchoring has to be sized for the plant at full size, not at planting. Deeper posts, closer spacing, and end bracing are what keep it standing.
Should I take the trellis down over winter?
Take down anything fabric or plastic. Netting left out through a winter gets brittle from UV and full of dead vine that is miserable to clean in spring. Steel posts and rigid panels can usually stay, and leaving them is often better than the damage from repeated handling.
