Every listing leads with tonnage, so that is what people compare. It is the wrong first question, and the reason is sitting in your wood pile.
The short version
- Knots beat diameter. A knotty elm round is harder than a bigger, straight ash one.
- Cycle time is the number you pay on every split. Tonnage you never use costs nothing but money.
- Electric for a garage, gas for a woodlot. Power source is about where you work.
- Vertical saves your back on rounds too heavy to lift.
- A maul is still the answer for a few cords of straight wood.
Why we will not tell you a tonnage
You will find charts that map diameter to tons. They read as authoritative and they leave out the variable that decides most hard splits.
Force needed goes up with diameter, yes. It also goes up with knots, with twisted or interlocked grain, and it changes with how dry the wood is. Elm is the standing joke here because its interlocked grain makes even modest rounds miserable. A clean, straight-grained ash round of the same diameter is a different job entirely.
So the useful question is not what diameter you cut. It is what the worst wood on your property is, and whether you intend to split it or leave it. Size for that, not for the average.
The number that actually costs you an afternoon
Cycle time is how long the ram takes to push out and come back. You pay it on every split, and a cord is a lot of splits.
Extra tonnage sits unused and costs you nothing except the purchase price. A slow cycle costs you time every time you use the machine, for as long as you own it. Once tonnage is adequate for your worst wood, cycle time is the number to compare.

The honest split is location. If your wood comes to a yard with power, electric is quieter, cleaner and needs almost nothing over winter. If you split where the tree fell, that decision is already made for you.
Horizontal, vertical, and your back
A horizontal splitter needs every round lifted onto the beam. That is fine at firewood sizes and unpleasant at big ones. A vertical machine lets you tip a heavy round over and split it at ground level. Some convert between the two. If you handle big rounds this is not a convenience feature, it is the difference between finishing the pile and giving up on it.
When a maul is still the right tool
A splitter is not automatically an upgrade. For a few cords a year of straight-grained wood, a maul is set up in the time it takes to carry it outside, costs a fraction as much, never fails to start, and needs no fuel, cord or storage space.
A splitter earns its place on volume, on rounds too heavy to lift onto a chopping block, and on knotty wood a maul bounces off. Plenty of people own both and reach for the maul more often than they expected to.

Your machine's manual is the instruction that counts. These are the general rules, and most splitter injuries are hands:
- Both hands clear of the wedge and the beam before you move the control
- Never reach across a moving ram to reposition a round
- One person operates and feeds. A second person feeding while you work the control is how hands get caught
- Level ground, and chock it if there is any slope
- Eye protection. Splits throw pieces
- Never run a gas engine in a closed garage or barn

How many tons does a log splitter need?
There is no honest universal answer, and anyone giving you one has skipped the hard part. Tonnage interacts with species, diameter, moisture, grain and knots, and knots matter more than diameter. A straight-grained ash round splits at a fraction of the force a knotty elm round of the same size needs. Match the machine to the worst wood you actually cut, not to the average.
Is an electric log splitter powerful enough?
For seasoned, straight-grained wood at ordinary firewood diameters, usually yes. Electric splitters run on household current, produce no exhaust so they can be used in a garage or barn, and are quiet enough to talk over. What they cannot do is go where there is no power, and the biggest gas machines carry more force than any electric one.
