Goats need to be dry and out of the wind. They do not need to be warm. Get those two the right way round and most of the rest is detail.

The short version

  • A three-sided shed handles most climates. Back wall 4 to 6 feet, front 6 to 8 feet.
  • Open side away from your worst weather. Usually south or east.
  • Dry beats warm. Damp air and ammonia cause pneumonia. Cold does not.
  • Air in above their heads, so it mixes before it reaches them. That is airflow. Air blowing on a goat is a draft.
  • Build it where water runs off, not where it collects.

How much space per goat, and why you see four answers

Search this and you get numbers that do not agree. They are not wrong. They describe different kinds of housing.

Pick the row that matches how your goats actually live. Averaging them gives you a number nobody published and no source stands behind.

One more thing the numbers do not show. Goats bully each other. A shed that is big enough on paper still fails if there is one door and one goat decides to stand in it. Two openings, or one wide one, fixes more crowding than extra square feet does.

Air, and the difference between airflow and a draft

This is the part people get backwards. Closing a shed up tight to keep goats warm is how you make them sick.

Goats breathe out water. So does wet bedding. With nowhere to go, that moisture sits in the air and ammonia builds with it. Penn State Extension is direct about the result: condensation and ammonia collect, and pneumonia follows.

The published targets are about 4 to 15 air changes an hour, or roughly 20 cubic feet per minute per animal. Useful if you are sizing a fan. For a shed, the practical version is simpler.

The rule that matters

Fresh air should come in above the goats, so it mixes with warmer air before it reaches them. An open ridge, a gap under the eaves, or a tall open front all do this. Air that blows straight onto a goat at body height is a draft, and a draft is a different problem from bad airflow. You want the first without the second.

Staying dry starts before you build

Bedding cannot fix a wet site. Put the shed on the high ground you have. Walk the spot after heavy rain and look for where water runs and where it stands. Standing water next to a shed ends up inside it.

Extension sources list straw, wood shavings, shredded paper and corn cobs as bedding. None of them is the answer on its own. What they all care about is the same thing: plenty of it, clean, and dry.

Wet bedding is not just uncomfortable. It is where the ammonia comes from, and ammonia is what hurts lungs. If you can smell it at goat height, it has been too long.

Feeding and water inside the shelter

Goats waste hay. They pull it out, walk on it, and then will not eat it. A hay rack or wall feeder keeps hay off the ground, which cuts waste and keeps bedding drier at the same time.

Loose minerals need their own covered feeder. Rain turns loose mineral into a brick, and a goat will not work at it. Keep it under cover and keep it separate from the hay.

Water goes outside the bedded area if you can manage it. A tipped or splashed bucket in the bedding undoes everything the last section was about.

What kind of shelter do goats need?
