Water Storage Tanks
Two tanks can look identical and be completely different products. The difference is printed on the manufacturer's spec sheet, not visible on the tank.
The short version
- Potable is a rating, not a look. No stated rating means not rated.

Potable or not, and why you cannot tell by looking
A tank intended to hold drinking water has to be made from materials rated for it. The marker to look for is NSF/ANSI 61, the standard for drinking water system components, stated by the manufacturer for that specific tank.
A tank sold for irrigation, rainwater or chemical storage may be the same shape, the same colour and from the same factory, and still not carry that rating. Nothing about the tank in front of you tells you which one it is.
If the manufacturer does not state a potable rating, treat it as not rated. That is the safe reading, and it is also usually the correct one, because a maker who has paid for certification says so prominently.
The weight people forget
Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per US gallon. Run that out and it gets serious quickly.

That load is permanent and it does not care whether the ground is frozen or saturated. A base that seemed fine in August can settle in March, and a leaning tank puts stress on fittings that were never meant to carry it. Level, engineered, and built for the full weight.
Light and cold
Light grows algae. A translucent tank in sun is a greenhouse, and the dark colour on most outdoor tanks is there to stop it. Shade helps on top of that. Sun also works on the plastic itself over years, which is why tanks meant to live outdoors are made for it and stock tanks meant for a barn are not.
Cold splits things in a predictable order. Exposed fittings and pipework go first, then the water in the tank. Burying below frost line, putting the tank somewhere heated, or draining for winter are the three usual answers, and which one applies depends on your climate rather than on the tank.
Why there is nothing to buy on this page

Will a water tank crack if it freezes?
It can. Water expands as it freezes and a full rigid tank has nowhere to put that expansion. In a freezing climate the usual answers are burying the tank below frost, housing it somewhere heated, or draining it for winter. Fittings and exposed pipe usually freeze before the main body does.
Is a cistern the same as a water tank?
Roughly, and cistern usually implies larger and often buried or below a building. The distinctions that matter are the same either way: what the tank is rated to hold, whether light reaches the water, whether it can freeze, and what is carrying the weight.
Where should a water storage tank sit?
On something engineered to carry it when full, level, and out of direct sun where you can manage it. Uphill of where the water is used buys you gravity pressure without a pump, which is worth a lot during an outage. Local rules often cover tank siting, so check before you build a base.
